EFFECTS OF SUMMER LIGHT ON HAIR

During the summer hair and skin are exposed to high intensity light and UV lights. Add to this exposure, wind, salt or chlorinated and it is easy to see how the hair’s structure can be damaged. Hair loses moisture, lipids are lost and the protein structure deteriorates. The result is porous hair and faded color.

HIGH-ENERGY UV LIGHT REACTS WITH THE HAIR IN TWO MAIN WAYS

  • UVA, UVB and visible radiation break down the natural pigment in hair, melanin. This is also called “photobleaching”. The melanin, like in the skin acts as a natural UV protection filter for the hair, but gets damaged itself in the process. This color breakdown also occurs in colored hair leading to visible color decrease.
  • UV radiation reacts with metal residues on the hair leading to the formation of free radicals that damage the hair protein structure. This leads to a weakening of the hair and a change in its surface shield, the cuticle.

EFFECTS OF SALT WATER, CHLORINATED WATER AND COPPER IN WATER

  1. Chlorine is added to pool water to kill germs and bacteria. As a harsh oxidizer it also causes direct chemical reactions in the hair which can result in changes to the hair’s components, physical properties, and the electrical charge of minerals bonded to hair. The direct chemical changes include reactions with the lipid film on the cuticle, the proteins which form the cortex and the melanin pigments, which give hair its color. The reactions with the melanin pigments results in color fading, this occurring on both natural and colored hair. Chlorine also removes the lipids, which form the essential film that protects the hair, plus erodes the cell cement which contains the lipids. This results in a loss of hair shine and flexibility, as well as making the hair more susceptible to mechanical damage. When chlorine reacts with keratin it creates water-soluble chemicals that weaken the chemical bonds between the fibers forming the cortex. Also chlorine can part the hair fibers. As the crystallization process develops inside the hair, the chlorine crystals can separate the hair fibers which disrupts the structural integrity of the hair shaft. Once the bonds are broken, the hair becomes weak and the ends of the hairs split. The chlorine salt crystallization process may also affect the hair cuticle. If the chlorine gets between the scales of the cuticles it could push the scales up, making hair feel rough and prone to damage or breakage. These raised and damaged cuticles reflect light poorly and so the hair fiber looks dull, dry and may feel rough to the touch.
  2. Salt and ocean water have similar drying effects on hair. The natural moisture-lipid profile makes the hair elastic, feel soft and resistant to external influences. Sea water is osmotic which means it draws moisture out of the hair and like skin, hair can soon become dry and porous. The first signs of dryness are difficulty when combing and knotted ends. Dryness can leave hair prone to further damage.
  3. Copper content in drinking water is known to cause hair damage. Green-tinged hair is caused by the hair’s reaction to copper, and is most prevalent in those that have naturally blond or bleached hair. Most people associate this unsightly color change with swimming in a chlorinated pool, and quite rightly too. Chlorinated pools often contain copper algaecides – a compound that helps prevent the growth of algae. This deposits on the hair. However, copper can also be found in home water supplies, especially if your pipes are made of copper. To combat this the System Professional EnergyCodeTM Complex contains Histidin which reduces the effect of copper on the hair.

The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is the measurement used for effective sun protection of skin. It indicates the extended possible exposure time of skin to UV light. For hair, System Professional Solaris products employ Helioguard technology which includes highly effective broadband UV filters that protect the hair fiber to its inner alpha helix. This minimizes the damaging effects of radiation on the hair’s protein.

Visible signs of a lack of sun or water protection:

  • Color fading and shifting
  • Dry hair feel brittle and damaged lengths
  • Tense and irritated scalp
  • Hair looking lack-lustre
