Long term suppleness and smoothness. Hair full of energy with a balanced lipid profile, for increased protection against external influences and further drying out.

The moisture balance of hair is the basis for healthy hair that’s full of energy. It also determines other hair attributes such as texture and manageability. This, however, can fluctuate significantly depending upon various influences. Hair is in fact hygroscopic. This means it absorbs and gives-off water molecules through air humidity. The weight of bonded water within hair fluctuates between approximately 10% (in desert climate, dry central heating) and 30% (in tropical rainforest, fog or sauna).

The water bound to hair evaporates not only from the outside, but also partly from the inside, during the drying of hair, exposure to the sun or under conditions of low air humidity. This causes the moisture content of the hair to drop. The hair loses elasticity and feels rough and dry.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF INSUFFICIENT MOISTURE?

Dry hair can start with a dry scalp. A hypo-function of the sebaceous glands causes lack of the protective lipid film. This means the hair is prone to dryness. As the hair grows longer the natural lipids get lost, and cannot protect the delicate protein structure of the hair anymore. Once the protective lipid film is lost, moisture cannot be retained in the hair.

EXPERT DIAGNOSIS

  • Hair structure is not damaged but feels dry due to external and natural causes
  • Feels hard and lacks smoothness
  • Low elasticity and hard to manage
  • Coarse or naturally curly hair types
  • Long hair has lost lipids over time and shows signs of dryness

EXPERT TIP

For hair with more damage, combine with the Repair line for more intense nourishment.
The hair can tend to be dry due to various influencing factors:

  • Low relative air humidity (e.g. dry air from central heating in winter) leads to loss of moisture.
  • Sun or too much blow-drying can dry out the hair.
  • Low elasticity and hard to manage
  • Chlorinated and sea water extract moisture from the hair.
  • Hair that is frequently shampooed, blow-dried or heat-styled can also become dry.

To prevent and treat this moisture loss dry hair, but even healthy and chemically untreated hair, needs a hair care treatment that will retain its moisture content and protect it from drying out.
